A Collaborative Approach to Tackling Gynecological Cancer in Colombia: The G-CIGO Group.

Beginning in 2018, GCI past fellow, Dr. Abraham Hernandez, along with colleagues Dr. Marc Pierre, Dr. Rene Pareja, Dr. Javier Burvano, Dr. Adriana Castaño, Dr. Henry Idrobo, and Dr. Ilse Vasquez, created and led the first multidisciplinary cooperative group in Colombia for gynecological malignancies. The group called, Grupo Colombiano De Investigación En Ginecología Oncológica (G-CIGO), holds bi-monthly education online sessions as well as bi-monthly tumor boards in Spanish. The educational sessions have focused on topics such as fertility sparing surgery for ovarian cancer, management of platinum sensitive relapse, and the clinical application of the Fagotti resectability score.

G-CIGO believes this approach of collaboration and information sharing allows oncologists to have a better understanding of the Colombian landscape and identify health care barriers. The group is working on developing clinical guidelines following the international standard of care but adapting them to the Colombian reality with a special emphasis on low-income women.

Currently, the group has over 100 members from various specialties. If you would like to learn more about the group or to be added to the mailing list, please contact our program manager Lindsay Krush at info@globalcancerinstitute.org  or fill out the form below so she can put you in touch with Dr. Hernandez.
