GCI's Patient Navigation Program in Rio de Janeiro, run by Dr. Sandra Gioia, won the Innovative Initiative Forum for Breast Cancer Control.
Global Cancer Institute is happy to announce that this past weekend our Patient Navigation Program in Rio de Janeiro, run by Dr. Sandra Gioia, was the winner of the Innovative Initiative Forum for Breast Cancer Control.
This award was presented for new, innovative solutions to the evolving needs of breast cancer patients and the use of transformational methodologies that interact with the population.
Our patient navigation program was developed with the aim of promoting the adherence to the “60 Day Law” for breast cancer patients in Rio de Janeiro. This law states that all patients with cancer should start treatment within 60 days after diagnosis.
Dr. Gioia’s program was able to achieve 52% of patients enrolled in patient navigation successfully starting treatment within 60 days. Currently, data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health show that only 10% of breast cancer patients in Rio de Janeiro access treatment within the 60-day period.
Patient Navigation has been very successful in this setting and we congratulate the team for their hard work and accomplishments!
