On May 26, in collaboration with Ms. Renata Rodovalho from Avon Institute and Ms.Marcelle Medeiros from Fundação Laço Rosa, Dr. Sandra Gioia, an integral Global Cancer Institute team member, held a live Facebook discussion on the importance of patient navigation and the training of patient navigators in Brazil. The conversation was held in Portuguese.
Dr. Gioia is an expert in the field of patient navigation. In her first pilot patient navigation study, Dr. Gioia focused on implementing a program aimed at improving the adherence to the Law of 60 Days in Brazil. This law states that Brazilian patients using the public health system should start treatment for any type of cancer within 60 days of diagnosis. The program was able to successfully navigate 52% of patients in the program compared to data from the Ministry of Health showing that only 10% of patients in Rio de Janeiro receive treatment within the mandatory 60 days. To read more about the results of that study, find the published article here.
During this one-hour discussion, Dr. Gioia talks about the role of a patient navigator and their impact on the patient journey through the cancer system. She also discusses the how patient navigator can be an important tool during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A great thanks to Fundação Laço Rosa and Avon Institute in organizing and hosting this wonderful talk! The discussion can be found on the Fundação Laço Rosa Facebook page or by clicking here.
